Scramble for Africa

Earlier this year, we began working with Steven Fake and Kevin Funk to promote their book on Sudan, Scramble for Africa: Darfur Intervention and the USA. Steven and Kevin have written a careful, yet scathing, indictment of the constellation of government leaders, corporate media outlets, and NGOs swirling around Sudan and the myriad ways in which the West has failed Darfur. The book has been getting rave reviews, and we're hoping that with the upcoming presidential and primary elections in Sudan that this book reaches the wider audience that it deserves.
What you can learn from Scramble for Africa:
- What is the history of US relations with Sudan?
- Has the humanitarian effort been funded at the necessary levels?
- Why are Washington, Save Darfur affiliated NGOs, and the press corp highlighting the humanitarian situation in Darfur (where the US has little leverage) while far more people have been killed in Iraq or the Congo?
- Has the US contributed to the escalating conflict by supporting some of the most brutal figures in the Khartoum regime?
- Humanitarian Intervention: myth vs. reality
- If the US government's approach and that of the International NGO community are both wrong, is there another solution?
Richard Falk, Milbank Professor of Law Emeritus, Princeton University, has said: "Kevin Funk and Steven Fake have written a devastating critique of the ‘humanitarian’ response of the United States to the Darfur crisis, while offering a genuine humane alternative that would lessen the ordeal, if not bring it to an end. Well-researched, easy to read, and utterly convincing, a crucial book for anyone concerned about achieving a morally and politically acceptable U.S. foreign policy.”
